sunday: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: This is another true story. After this ran, I received a letter from a reader who told me a story: She had been sitting with a friend who was dying and didn’t have much more time to live. Her friend told her that when she died, she would come back as a humming bird and let everyone know she was OK. A few days after the friend passed away, the reader was outside filling her feeder when a humming bird came and hovered right next to her for an extended period of time. Her husband was able to take a photograph. She said it was the most comforting thing imaginable. I still have the photo she sent me.

Lynn's Comments: This strip is another scene from my childhood. My brother and I would walk down to the North Vancouver waterfront, go onto the docks where the small fishing boats were moored and fish for minnows. When we had quite a few, we’d throw them one by one to the seagulls. One day, one very aggressive gull outmaneuvered all the others and was the only one left to grab the fish. This gull was big and mean and threatening. When he was sure that he was guaranteed a free meal, we tied a codline to a minnow and tossed it up to the gull. The gull swallowed the fish and took off into the air. We allowed the codline to unwind to the end of the spool where it snapped tight forcing the gull to stop in mid air. Zannngggg! What a sight! The gull would not let go of the fish and fought us as we reeled it in—flapping and fighting against the pull of the line. Terrified, we hung onto the codline to see who would give up first—us or the gull. Inevitably, the gull regurgitate the fish, but not before he had given us the scare of our lives! Our friends, the O’Grady’s enjoyed seeing their name in the Sunday funnies.

Lynn's Comments: One of the things I loved about Ontario was the fall markets. I looked forward to the bins of apples, the many varieties of pumpkins, sweet corn, home-canned pickles, fresh produce and baking. All around us would be the spectacular colours of the fall leaves and the smell of frost in the air. Some memories come back in Technicolor!

Lynn's Comments: I had so much fun drawing Eddy trying to get a foothold on a slippery floor. Drawings like this filled me up for a week. No mater how hard the writing was, the drawing made this job a joy.

Lynn's Comments: I usually do my research before I go to work, but I didn’t this time. After I drew up this Sunday page, I went and looked at some “steamy” magazines. None of the women in the sensuous photos were smiling. It made me wonder how much joy was in this business—for them

Lynn's Comments: I once went with a friend to visit Harry Morgan and his wife. Harry played the part of the Colonel on “M.A.S.H.” On a tour of their house, Harry’s wife showed me the secret to their long and happy marriage: they had separate bathrooms. At the time, I thought it was a bit excessive to have two bathrooms…but now that I live in a home with two upstairs conveniences, I can safely say that this is one of the reasons my partner and I get along so well—binary biffs.

Lynn's Comments: I gotta say it again…I absolutely loved drawing the dogs. Their facial expressions and body language could be exaggerated far beyond the human forms and the results were always hilarious. After I introduced dogs into the strip, the drawing became more and more enjoyable.

Lynn's Comments: My brother did this. Watching our mom making root beer in the family washing machine (she washed it out first), he became fascinated by the way she filled the bottles. Rather than use the spigot at the bottom of the washer, she used a siphon. She also used one to empty our kiddy pool in the back yard. I remember our dad mopping the bathroom floor after one of Alan’s siphon experiments and watching to see if the linoleum tiles were lifting. Funny memories…from a kid’s point of view.

Lynn's Comments: CKAT really was our local country radio station and I got a call from the station manager to thank me for the nod. I was told they would play any country song I could think of. I asked for, “You Done Stomped on My Heart.” Yes, that classic and classy tune came from none other than the wonderful John Denver. Another reason he was one of my faves.
