Secondary Characters
This section contains info on the secondary characters who were most important to the strip, and to the Pattersons themselves. Lynn included many, many more people in For Better or For Worse® over the years. For an exhaustive list, explore the "Cast of Characters" section of our comics archive.
The Poiriers

Connie Poirier
Connie is Elly's friend, Lawrence's mother, and owner of Sera the dog (who happens to be Edgar's mom by way of Farley). Connie is married to Greg. Connie is a retired Registered Radiologist Technician whom Elly met in university. They have been friends ever since.

Lawrence Poirier
Lawrence starred in Lynn's most controversial story when he came out as a gay teen. Despite being temporarily expelled from his house, he's mended fences with his family. After studying Botany in college, Lawrence purchased Lakeshore Landscaping where he had worked part time as a student. He operates the business with his partner, Nicholas.

Greg Thomas
Connie's husband, Greg, is a retired bank manager who loves to golf! Greg is Lawrence's stepfather and the one who threw Lawrence out of the house temporarily when Lawrence announced that he was gay.

Molly and Gayle
Molly and Gayle are Greg's two daughters from an earlier relationship. They moved to Milborough with Connie and her family when they were teenagers.
The Nichols Family

Anne Nichols
Anne is Elly's friend. She is married to Steve and they have three children: Christopher, Richard and Leah (who was born with one extra finger on each hand). Anne and Steve live next door to the Pattersons (on the left side). Anne is the catering manager at the Empire Hotel.

Steve Nichols
Steve is Anne's husband. He's a traveling salesman who worked for Jo Weeder's father. He's a junk collector. Anne suspects that he has been frequently unfaithful.

Christopher, Richard and Leah Nichols
Christopher, Richard, and Leah are Anne and Steve's kids.
The Enjos

Carol Enjo
Carol Enjo is married to Keith and is the mom of Dawn and Brian. Carol is a nurse in the local hospital. She loves to display and discuss the many heirlooms that she has collected from her parents and relatives in Japan. Her pride and joy of the collection are the dolls, of which she has collected the entire Emperor's Court—a very traditional Japanese gift.

Dawn Enjo
Dawn and Liz were inseparable as kids; doing everything from camping to figure skating together. They especially enjoyed bothering their older brothers. When they hit their teen years, Elizabeth started dating and Dawn began hanging out with a larger group of friends. They struggled to stay close through the teenage drama, but figured out how to make their friendship work.

Brian Enjo
Brian Enjo is a little bit smarter, more responsible and more of a philosopher than Michael, but Michael could still draw Brian into the kind of fun that often got them grounded. Pranking their little sisters was a favourite pastime when they were young. As teens, they spent all their free time hanging out with Gordon and Lawrence doing typical teenage-boy things.

Keith Enjo
Keith Enjo is married to Carol and is the father of Brian and Dawn. Since he is now retired from his air traffic controller job, he takes gardening even more seriously—he has yet to grow the world's largest pumpkin, but he's still trying! Now Keith can also spend more time building model airplanes and working on his model train layout, which is made more realistic by the addition of the finished model airplanes.
The Mayes Family

Gord Mayes
Gordon is an old friends of Mike's. Gord was often at the Patterson house as he struggled with his troubled family life. Gord eventually purchased Daly's Garage and made it his own by adding more gas pumps, a restaurant, and a sales lot with the assistance of Elly and John who invested in the business. Gordon's parents have redeemed themselves by attending AA meetings and now they are involved in their grandchildren's lives.

Tracey Mayes
Tracey is Gordon's wife and mother of their two children, Rosemary and Paul, whom April often babysits. Tracey and Gordon had been friends as kids. As teenagers, they dated other people until Gordon began to see Tracey in a new light. The high school sweethearts fell in love, got married young, and took over the garage where Gordon worked.

Paul and Rosemary Mayes
Gordon and Tracey's kids, Paul and Rosemary, were born when Gord and Tracey still lived in the tiny apartment above Gordon's Garage.
Other Secondary Characters

Agnes Dingle
Agnes Dingle rented an apartment in her London, Ontario house to Mike and Weed when they were in university. She's a crotchety old widow with a heart of gold. After having a stroke, she has moved to an apartment closer to her son, Adam. She also has another son and a daughter who both live with their families in Saskatchewan.

Becky McGuire
Becky was once April's closest female friend. She's a spoiled kid whose parents are separated. She displays some personality traits that April doesn't like. She is a former member of 4 Evah (keyboard and vocals are her forte), but she left the band to pursue her burgeoning solo career and has had some success.

Brad Luggsworth
Brad used to be a bully at Mike's school. He's since grown up, straightened out, joined the air force for a term, and when he was released, became a police officer. He responded to Elly's call when she reported the theft at her store several years ago. Since then, he's been enjoying his time on the force and has married. He and his wife have two children.

Candace Halloran
Candace and Liz went to grade school together but weren't close friends until they ended up as roommates in college. Candace is a rebel with eccentric fashion sense; a former bully with an unpleasant home life who later on decided to study psychology.

The Cruikshanks
Bev Cruikshank, John's sister, is a veterinarian who lives on a farm outside Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband Dan. The Patterson kids sometimes spent summers at the farm doing chores and having fun with their cousin, Laura.

Duane Mitchell
Duane is a friend of Liz's from school. Smart and sarcastic, Duane likes to shock teachers and authority figures with his look.

Duncan Anderson
Duncan is April's childhood buddy since kindergarten. He's now a member of their band, 4 Evah (he plays guitar). Duncan's dad enjoys model railroading and visits John often. Usually Duncan tags along, and he and April play music together while their fathers socialize.

Fiona Brass
Fiona is John's cousin who arrived with her cat, Beaumont, in tow to "help" Elly and John after the arrival of baby April. She moved to an apartment and became manager of a pool hall.

Jean Baker
Jean is John's administrative assistant and right-hand woman at the dental clinic who occasionally picks up gifts for Elly on John's behalf. She's happily married, has a university-aged daughter named Britney and plans to continue working at the clinic for as long as she can!

Jeremy Jones
Jeremy Jones was April's nemesis—he was the class bully. He's an unhappy kid whose father is always on the road with his band. Jeremy was hit by a car while chasing April on his bicycle. Deep down inside, he wishes he could be part of the band 4 Evah, but keeps his distance. He loves to tinker with sound systems and could someday be helpful to others.

Josef Myron Weeder
Jo Weeder ("Weed" to his friends) is Mike's friend and colleague. Weed is a talented photographer who's making a career for himself despite his wealthy family's urgings for him to take over the Weeder family business. Weed is dating Carleen Stein, his assistant.

Lovey Saltzman
Lovey is a wonderfully eccentric Jewish lady from Poland who, with her husband Morrie, owned the buildings where Deanna, Michael, and Weed rented their apartments until a fire damaged them. She later sold her houses to Weed and Carleen. She offers parenting advice and food, and once nearly made Mr. B. into a stew! Lovey has two kids, one of whom is a daughter named Cynthia who lives in Seattle and has two children.

Mira and Wilf Sobinski
Mira, Deanna's mother, is a devoted grandmother, but is often overbearing and difficult. Her son-in-law Michael and her husband Wilf have begun standing up to her. Deanna hopes to be able to do the same someday. Wilf is Deanna's father. He is a softspoken man who owns a hardware store and often takes a backseat to Mira with her strong personality.

Moira Kinney
Moira, a longtime employee at Lilliput's, became the owner when Elly decided to retire and sell the bookstore. Moira enjoys reading, sewing, and making "slow food" in her crockpot when she's not at work. Her goal is to create the perfect roast beef dinner with minimum effort.

Ned Tanner
He's yet to have a speaking part in the strip since he's made of plastic and doesn't talk, but Ned is one of Lynn's more interesting "characters." Ned spent most of his time hanging around the apartment that Mike and Weed rented from Mrs. Dingle.

Shannon Lake
Shannon is a special needs student at the high school where April attends Home Ec. classes. Shannon is a character based on Lynn's niece Stephanie.

Sharon Edwards
Sharon Edwards was Liz's favourite grade school teacher. When Liz moved on to seventh grade, Miss Edwards was transferred to Liz's middle school because she wanted to teach math to students in higher grades. In a wheelchair since the age of sixteen (after a motorcycle accident), Miss Edwards was the one who inspired Liz to become a teacher. She's now Mrs. Taylor (she married her wheelchair mechanic!) and still participates in marathons. She and Liz email each other regularly to discuss teaching and everyday gossip.

Shawna-Marie Verano
Shawna-Marie is one of Liz's friends from grade school. She works in kinesiology and consults on sports medicine for the local hockey and football teams. She still lives in Milborough and she and Liz have kept in touch.

Ted McCauley
Ted is a general practioner who works in the same building that houses John's dental practice. He lives with his mother and is too self-absorbed to have a mature relationship with anybody, although Ted did date Connie for a brief period before breaking her heart. He had been married once to Irene, who was his secretary for 12 years. The marriage lasted six months. He's still practicing medicine in John's building and shares a coffee or lunch with John from time to time.

Thelma Baird
Thelma Baird is an elderly neighbour whom Elly often visited when the kids were young. Mrs. Baird raised Old English Sheepdogs—one of which became a member of the Patterson family. Both Farley the dog and Mrs. Baird have passed away.
