Lynn's Comments: My mom used to hang the laundry on two lines in our backyard. Once, we were guilty of getting the sheets dirty by playing badminton. Another time was when my brother put the neighbour’s small dog into the hanging fold of a sheet and let him fumble his way out. It never occurred to us that we were ruining an expensive piece of fabric and wasting hours of hard work. We were kids. We just didn't think at all!

Lynn's Comments: Looking back on this strip, I had a hard time figuring out what Elizabeth was doing in the first panel here. She is stuffing her clothes into the washing machine. When I work with students, I always tell them to make sure the audience knows what they are looking at, that they use good reference so that appliances and machinery look right. Here, it seems, I didn't follow my own advice!

Lynn's Comments: We didn’t have a clothes drier when I was a kid. Everyone put their laundry outside on clotheslines. Apparently, the neighbours really did look at your laundry and made judgments because my mom always put the best sheets and towels on the top line where they could be seen. Everything else was hidden or hung in the basement.

Lynn's Comments: Folks at the syndicate told me the American newspaper editors would all change the Canadian spelling of “racquet” to “racket.” Surprisingly, very few did. Maybe it's because "racquet" sounds better.
