road: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: The garbage dump in Lynn Lake, Manitoba was called, "The Exchange." Folks were leaving town on a regular basis and often the dump was a treasure trove of unwanted but really good stuff. I do remember getting all excited about a trip to the "nuisance grounds." Sometimes I brought home more than I threw away.

Lynn's Comments: This reminds me of a story. My friend Mike Peters, who does the wonderful comic strip "Mother Goose and Grimm," told me that his daughter once left her lunch at home and he decided to take it to the school himself. Knowing she'd be thoroughly embarrassed to see him at the door of her classroom with her lunch in hand...he dressed as Superman. He burst into her class holding out the lunch, cape flying, and shouting, "Superman to the rescue!!" She was speechless...and will tell you today that it was one of the craziest things that had ever happened to her. Needless to say, his daughter never forgot her lunch again!

Lynn's Comments: This strip left readers wondering and imagining what was happening behind those closed doors. Not showing anything more was a good thing—it kept the strip from becoming too negative, and it gave readers the opportunity to think about what goes on in their own neighbourhoods. You can suspect something is happening, but you might never know for sure.

Lynn's Comments: Here is where I failed my exam. Cars in the 60s were mostly standard shift, so parking on a hill meant using the clutch carefully when pulling out from the curb. I pushed down hard on the gas, took my foot off the clutch, and roared uncontrollably into the parking lot across the street. It happened to be the RCMP building and two police officers were sitting in their cruiser when I rear-ended them. I didn't hit them hard, but I could see one officer's coffee spout from his thermos as the other hit the horn. When the officers got out of the cruiser and saw the car that had hit them, with the "Driving School" sign on the roof, they laughed out loud. I received no ticket, but I knew I'd more than failed the exam. It would take me another year before I had the guts to try again...and the next time, I had a kind and supportive examiner. I passed.

Lynn's Comments: Around this time, I began to work with another graphic artist. Laura could easily duplicate my style, so with more time to do background details, the art soon became much more complicated. I would draw the strip in pencil, ink the characters, and give her the rest to do. Up until I retired from the strip, Laura became another right hand!

Lynn's Comments: This cartoon shows how "motion" can be suggested by not having the wheels of a vehicle touch the ground. If you were to take a piece of tracing paper, trace the outline of the car and move the image down so that the wheels touch the curve of the road, you would instantly see the car standing still. A shadow underneath adds to the illusion. This is one little trick of the trade!
