road: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: The guys Rod had offered to pick up had been on a canoe trip with an outdoor adventure company, which had already arranged their return transportation, but my husband wanted the challenge of finding them and ferrying them back to Lynn Lake, Manitoba--where we were living. I was against the idea from the start, but Rod's dad, having been a prospector in his day, thought it would all be fine. The two men went over the maps, worked out the exact location the canoeists would be found, and prepared for the departure. The flight was on.

Lynn's Comments: Again, the story of the rescue was chronicled in the strip. Rod and the others did find it hard to fend off coughs and colds after their ordeal. The legacy of the accident will last all of us a lifetime. We are all so sure that "it won't happen to us," but when it does, we learn to appreciate every day--knowing how fragile we really are.

Lynn's Comments: I have offered to help with projects only to discover that I was the only one who was really working on them! The adage, "Be careful what you offer to do," should be added to "Be careful what you wish for." Both can have serious consequences.

Lynn's Comments: In the end, the classes paid off. We actually looked forward to convention dinners--and it gave my husband the ammunition to say: "What do you mean I never do anything for you?!"

Lynn's Comments: This happened. I was glad to have been wearing clean underwear. Old superstitions can bear fruit. In this case, it was Fruit of the Loom!

Lynn's Comments: Every first snowfall, I used to hit the ditch. Maybe it’s because I was used to driving fast on rough, flat surfaces and didn't have my winter reflexes. Whatever the reason, I would call our friend Gerry Voyer and ask him to pull me out. A couple of times, this happened on our country road and I'd walk to Gerry’s garage where he’d get out his truck and take me to the scene of the "accident." One winter’s day, I was taking a long stroll down MacPherson Drive when Gerry passed me in his truck. He stopped, rolled down his window and sighed. "OK," he said. "Where is it?" He thought I had hit the ditch again and was coming for help. It was then that I realized just how often I had run off the road!

Lynn's Comments: When I was a kid, Camp Kawkawa was the name of the camp my family went to every year. The cabins we stayed in are still standing on Kawkawa Lake in Hope, BC.

Lynn's Comments: My friend Deborah and I walked past a bunch of construction workers who were sitting on a sidewalk having their lunch. We were in New York—it was a narrow space and they had to move their legs to let us by. As we passed, they continued their conversation and politely ignored us. When we reached the next block, Deb turned to me, smiled and said, "Remember when?"

Lynn's Comments: This really happened. It was a coat, actually, and I wrecked it. Being a cartoonist was a good thing. When something like this happened, I got a daily strip out of it …which really offset the misery!

Lynn's Comments: This actually happened. I was driving a friend back to his hotel and we got into an accident. When the police arrived, I didn't think they would believe our version of the story. I'm a cartoonist and my friend was a comedian!

Lynn's Comments: My mother would drive my friends and me to school dances. We'd cringe in the back seat, hoping we wouldn't be seen. With great understanding, my mom would drop us off a block away from the school so we could walk, unaccompanied, by a "rent." Whatever rifts came between us, she could also be totally cool.

Lynn's Comments: One of the best things about summer camp for me was the bus ride there and back. The laughter, the singing, eating damp sandwiches (flattened in waxed paper bundles), hanging onto best friends who were strangers a week ago—what fun that was. After 65 years, the smell and the sounds of that long bus ride can be conjured up as if it all happened yesterday. Summer camp. It's a wonderful rite of passage.

Lynn's Comments: For years these kinds of cartoons (about wolf whistles and smart remarks directed at girls) were not considered in bad taste. In fact, this behavior was expected, and as a girl being whistled at by boys in a passing car (depending on the way it was done), I thought was funny and fun. Times have changed…and for the better.

Lynn's Comments: When I had done this cartoon and was looking at it in the paper, I realized I had missed the most important part of the joke. The sun should have been much more noticeable, and the last panel should have been a much more colourful sunset.
