dental clinic: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: When we moved to Lynn Lake, we took with us eight enormous reel-to-reel tapes of music especially chosen for the Dental clinic. The system we had was state of the art for the time, and we felt we had countless hours of enjoyable tunes, which would create a relaxing and pleasant ambience. After six months, we knew each piece by heart and could anticipate the song that would come next. Amazing what the human head can record, retain and regurgitate. Why is it that I can't remember a phone number or a password?

Lynn's Comments: My husband often came home exhausted. Working with sensitive people, using tiny instruments and fidgety materials in an awkward space, takes endless patience. Added to this is the management of staff and copious paperwork. I think dentistry is one of the most tiring jobs there are.

Lynn's Comments: This was the truth. It seemed that no expense was spared on things outside the house….but, the kitchen, where so much of my life was spent, didn't need improvements.

Lynn's Comments: Once I had decided I needed a new kitchen, however, I realized the whole dining area needed to be remodeled, as well.

Lynn's Comments: The other punchline I had for this strip was the kid yelling in the last panel: "Don't touch me!" That idea has been done quite a lot, so I had the assistant fall asleep instead. This wasn't one of my best Sunday pages, but when you're on a deadline, you sometimes turn in something you're not crazy about. Here, I felt that the drawing was sufficiently well done to carry the strip, but when it came out in the paper, I wished I’d given it another ending!

Lynn's Comments: I had a friend who added "ology" and "ality" to a number of words. Once the first "ology" came out, I couldn't listen to what he was saying. It was all "BS-ology" after that.

Lynn's Comments: Did I ever get into hot water over this one! Clinic staff wrote to say that it was a terrible thing to write notes in patients’ files suggesting they were difficult to work with and that PITN should never have been used. Well, we did write small notations like this just for our own information…and, the letters were: PITA!

Lynn's Comments: When I turned 40, it was no biggie. I rather liked being 40; I was doing some good work, my kids were becoming independent and my wrinkles weren't getting me down. I think men “crest” earlier when it comes to aging. This surprised me.

Lynn's Comments: This was true. Friends had come by with a sailboard and the owner—a man about our age, showed us how easy it was to master. Wrong. It is not easy, and those of us who tried and tried to get up on the thing suffered from sore arms for a week!

Lynn's Comments: I clearly remember sucking my thumb. I think I did this until I was in grade one. I remember the feel and the taste and the comfort. The good thing about thumbs (I thought at the time) is that they are permanently attached and always available.
