John: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: If any Canadians out there remember “Charlie Farquharson” —comedian Don Harron’s alter ego, you’ll recognize this sweater. As Charlie, he wore it until it was threadbare. One time, we were doing a stage show and one of the skits was about Charlie. Don, a good friend, offered to lend us his coveted sweater. I declined. Borrowing it would have been too big a risk! Don and I were friends for many years, and after his death, his partner, Claudette, had his cap and sweater sent to the Canadian archives—a fitting storage place for two iconic pieces of clothing.

Lynn's Comments: When my in-laws moved, we had to empty their freezer. It was huge and we went through the contents the way archaeologists would tackle a dig. There were pies on the bottom that must have been 15 years old. Not wanting to waste anything, Ruth dutifully cooked up everything she could—except the dried, wizened, freezer burned hot dogs. Not even the kids would touch those!

Lynn's Comments: If you don’t live in Ontario, Canada—or any other place where a block heater is a necessary winter appliance, you won’t know the nuisance and embarrassment of forgetting to unplug the thing when you drive away.

Lynn's Comments: Changing a character’s hair was always a big deal. I figured it wouldn’t make sense for teenagers to not go through some experimentation, so both Elizabeth and Michael had some different “looks” throughout the latter part of the strip. Elly and John, however, stayed pretty much the same.
