Lynn's Comments: After the applications for a new receptionist had been whittled down to a few, we called each girl out of the blue to see what her telephone attitude was like. An answer like, "Who? Who's calling? Hey, you kids shut the H*** up, I'm on the %#*&@^ phone!" was a definite "no."

Lynn's Comments: This story came about when I picked up a huge turkey by the metal tag and lifted it into my cart. It occurred to me that I had done something really stupid. The turkey weighed at least eighteen pounds, and if I'd dropped it, I could have broken a foot!

Lynn's Comments: Katie loved to play on the lazy Susan where I kept all my canned goods. As long as I could hear the rumble of the sturdily built shelves turning, I knew she was safe and not getting into trouble--so I thought. As she rode around one day, she amused herself by removing all the labels from the cans. We had mystery meals for months afterwards!

Lynn's Comments: This was based on our neighbours in Lynn Lake, who had an elaborate train set in their basement. When I saw it, I thought it belonged to their eldest son, but was surprised to discover that it was the dad who had set it up. This was long before my husband built a model train you could actually ride on! What is it with trains, anyway?

Lynn's Comments: Having Connie, Lawrence, and their new family move back into the Pattersons' neighbourhood gave me much more to write about. Elly and Connie were a good mix of characters, and Lawrence was a wonderful sidekick for Mike. I had written them out of the strip without realizing how much they added to it!

Lynn's Comments: This is exactly what I did! Yes, if I was determined to succeed at something, I was relentless--which is a good trait to have when it comes to a project or a career. Love, on the other hand, isn't something you can make happen!

At summer's end, I returned home, and as soon as I had some privacy, I called my silent "boyfriend" and asked why he hadn't written. He said he had but the letter must have been lost. I didn't believe him. He then said he'd written one but had been too shy to send it. I said, "show it to me." He couldn't find it. He said he would rewrite it, but by then, my jets had cooled and the relationship turned into a casual "hello" in the school cafeteria.

We graduated without anything more being said. Years later, we met in a Vancouver coffee shop. He was delighted to see me and I was more than happy to see him. We hugged and laughed about the crush and the silent summer, and bless his heart, he said he wished for all the world, that he had written.

Lynn's Comments: Our dog Willy would wait until we had finished eating before he dug into his kibble. If there was the smallest chance of leftovers, he wanted to be sure he had room. I did this strip with compassion and understanding—I wouldn't want to eat the same thing everyday either!

Lynn's Comments: The Fasts and the Bergans were friends in Lynn Lake; two of our favourite families. I loved to put the names of people we knew in the strip. It was a funny surprise. After the strip was published, their friends and family would contact them! It was a wonderful, continuing surprise.

Lynn's Comments: At the time this strip was written, our daughter was going to Western University in London, Ontario. Folks in both Western U. and the city of London enjoyed these references in the strip.
