Lynn's Comments: When I was doing this grocery store series, I had no plans to connect Michael with his co-worker, Rhetta. As in real life, stuff just happened. Things like this took me by surprise—and I just went with it. Sometimes the surprise worked out, sometimes it didn't. Either way, it added interest to the story.

Lynn's Comments: When my son was in high school, he had left a pair of shoes in the front hall—again. As I bent down to pick them up, I noticed how big they were. I remembered how tiny his shoes had been just a short while ago. I realized he and his feet were now the size of an adult and it wouldn't be long before I would be wishing his shoes were still in the hallway.

Lynn's Comments: I was given a placard, which read, "Boycott BC Hydro"” This was the company that governed the Vancouver transit lines at the time. I had read nothing about the reasons behind the bus fare hike and had no idea what "boycott" meant.

Lynn's Comments: Our enraged and noisy parade made it to the BC Hydro building where we demanded to see the Minister of Transportation. We were told that he was not in the building and that we should make our concerns known in writing. We were too excited and energized to be reasoned with. This was exciting!

Lynn's Comments: Dad explained why there had to be a hike in bus fares. They were raising wages, extending the service, and it would benefit seniors, as well, by allowing them to ride for free. He asked me if I knew what "boycott" meant. I had no idea. I felt like an idiot—and I was!

Lynn's Comments: Another bit of info to suggest that Gordon will go into the automotive business. At the time, I never planned on his eventual success, but deep down inside, I wanted the "underdog" to win!

Lynn's Comments: For this illustration, I used a really good die-cast model, which showed the underbody of the car. I used realistic models—of all kinds—all the time, and I encourage cartoonists and other graphic artists to buy them whenever they have the good fortune to find them.

Lynn's Comments: We had a great mechanic and were we ever grateful. He was honest, dedicated, funny, and great at his job. It occurred to me that the people you want to trust most in your life are your doctor, your lawyer, your contractor and your mechanic. Gerry was up there with the best.
