Lynn's Comments: When I was training our new puppy, the breeder told me to clap loudly when he was doing something wrong—that he would be shocked by the loud noise and stop. I did this and it seemed to work, as did the use of a water spray bottle. Puppy training was the only thing I knew anything about, so when my son was a toddler, I found myself clapping my hands and shouting, "NO!" the way I'd done with the dog. Somehow this wasn't such a good kid-training method. Since he knew the loud noise came from me, he simply enjoyed the opportunity to see me do it again and again!

Lynn's Comments: At the age of 72, I tried skipping. I figured it was something one never forgets how to do. I took the rope and...nothing! I couldn't do one proper jump. It was as if I'd never learned, and with all honesty...I did what April is doing in this panel. I started by stepping over the rope!

Lynn's Comments: At the time I was doing these strips, I had to pay attention to the age of the new puppy and to show his growth—week by week. Without a new puppy to measure, I had to guess...and I managed to do OK, but at the time it was hard to find research material!

Lynn's Comments: I don't think front doors are made with mail slots any more. Too bad...we had a lot of fun with ours!

Lynn's Comments: "FLADDAP" is one of the words I was accused of stealing from MAD Magazine artist, Don Martin. I had no idea that I had done so. Can you "steal" a sound effect?

Lynn's Comments: I had as much trouble trying to teach our dog when to bark as I did trying to teach him when NOT to!

Lynn's Comments: I still have these bunny slippers.

Lynn's Comments: The Patterson house overlooks a sizeable ravine. At the bottom is a river which, due to the spring rain, has become deep and dangerous.

Lynn's Comments: I was roundly criticized for showing April down at the river unsupervised...but these things happen—even when families are vigilant and responsible.

Lynn's Comments: This illustration was hard to draw. I was very emotional when I did it. I could see the outcome immediately, but readers had to wait for 24 hours to find out what happened next.

Lynn's Comments: Tragically, the day this strip was originally published was also the date of the Oklahoma bombing. There was no way to halt or change this story and it ran at a time when North America was in shock and people's hearts were breaking.
Thursday April 18, 2024

Lynn's Comments: On one hand, this story was running at the worst time possible. On the other hand, teachers in Edmonton were using it to teach young children about the dangers of playing in the local creeks—so dangerous in springtime.

Lynn's Comments: I actually tried this. My dog didn't eat the tape recorder, he just waited for the small dogs to come out of it.
