The Lives Behind the Lines: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: As I mentioned earlier, this story is based on a true incident. My son was working for a television station and wanted to get a great story. As it turned out, the girl he saw in the accident (from a distance) was someone he knew. It was with his help and approval that this event was included in the comic strip.

Lynn's Comments: A friend of ours was walking down the street with a painful, bow-legged gait. He passed one of his students who said, “Mr. Benson, I know what you were doing!” He blushed. She continued, “You were riding a horse!” He was relieved…he had just had a vasectomy.

Lynn's Comments: I tried to explore the complexities of having a “best friend” and friendships in general. This is another area I could have worked with a bit more but time and space were limited. Drawing new characters was also a challenge—I used photos from magazines to help me come up with new faces.

Lynn's Comments: In high school, I was a bit jealous of my friend Laurel who got a summer job working at a popular ice cream joint. One day I told her I wished I had her job. When she told me how hard it was to stand all day and dig hard ice cream out of the tubs for demanding and impatient people, I changed my tune!

Lynn's Comments: I’m looking at this again as someone they now call “elderly.” (Aaaaughhhh!) I was in my 40s when I did this strip, and from my present vantage point, I can’t imagine what these ladies are grousing about.

Lynn's Comments: I was sure when I did this cartoon that, in this respect, things hadn’t changed much since I was a teenager. The girls would get dressed up to go somewhere and wind up hanging around as the guys fixed or looked at or thought about buying a car. I received letters from women who’d had the same experience, but more from women who loved to fix and check out cars as much as the guys did!
