What, Me Pregnant?: Browse The Strips

Lynn's Comments: Situations like this really date the strip. Nobody uses an encyclopedia any more. In fact, I still spell the word the way I learned to spell it in the 50s—encyclopaedia.

Lynn's Comments: I omitted the top of the first 3 panels here just to see if it would make a nice change to the look of the strip. I think it did. It was around this time that I started to white out borders and let parts of the illustration extend outside the line. I’ve never been one to keep things the same; another reason why the characters "grew up."

Lynn's Comments: When the pregnancy story was coming to an end, friends of mine decided to throw a surprise baby shower for my "imaginary baby." I was spirited away from the house long enough for them to cover the front lawn with flamingos and a big stork carrying a baby in a bundle. When I went inside, there was a party all set up with gag gifts, munchies and an open bar. It was a great success. The funny thing is…I never had a baby shower for either of my REAL kids!!

Lynn's Comments: When we lived in Hamilton, Ontario the steel mills put so much soot into the air that as soon as you cleaned your windowsills, they turned black again. There was a saying, "Hamilton was a place where you opened the windows so you could hear the birds cough!"

Lynn's Comments: For some reason, expectant moms often have a few days of manic activity–like cleaning or doing yardwork, right before the baby is born. I scrubbed all the floors in the house the day before my son was born and I always wished I’d get that kind of energy back again!

Lynn's Comments: I had my son in the early 70s. They took him away and washed him and I didn't get to hold him for a long time. Five years later when I had my daughter, things had changed. I held her immediately. They didn't take her to be weighed and checked out until we had been with her for over an hour. That was a wonderful experience. That was the way it should be done!

Lynn's Comments: One thing nobody really talks about is how your seat feels after baby is born. Well, sitting down ain't comfy! My favourite gift to a brand-new mom is an egg timer and a box of "TUCKS" pads. The Tucks reduce swelling and inflammation and make life much easier. The egg timer is for the middle of the night when you’ve been up many times and done everything you can do and baby is STILL crying. It allows you to take a 10-minute time out.

Lynn's Comments: I called this imaginary baby "April" because she was all fiction and born on April 1st! Many folks wrote to tell me they had named their baby girls April because they were born April first!
