What, Me Pregnant?: Browse The Strips
Saturday November 16, 2019

Lynn's Comments: An animator friend called me the other day. He’s been doing some work for us on "gifs" – short animated pieces that can be shared on the internet. His question was, "Can I show the bottom teeth of the dog if he's grimacing?" The answer was YES! Grimacing is the only time that my characters showed their bottom teeth!

Lynn's Comments: When I was offered the opportunity to do a syndicated strip, Universal Press asked me to send 3 weeks of dailies as an example of my work. I was expecting my daughter, Katie, at the time, so pregnancy was on my mind. One of the strips I sent was me, well-rounded and trying to play the guitar. It was resting against my bouncing belly and I was saying to the baby inside, "What’s the matter, you don’t like Vivaldi?"

Lynn's Comments: My obstetrician said, "I believe in fat mothers and healthy babies." I took this too literally and gained 50 pounds! It was a long time before I got into my pre-baby clothes again.

Lynn's Comments: In the 1970s, moms hid their enlarging tummies under tent-like tops and A-line dresses. Today the "bump" is visible and celebrated. Times and fashions do change.

Lynn's Comments: This observation about the ceiling is directly related to the origin of this comic strip. Since patients spend a lot of time looking at an examining room ceiling, I asked my obstetrician to put something interesting on his. He said, "You're the cartoonist. I challenge you to draw something for me to put up there!"

Lynn's Comments: After 9 months, I had drawn over 80 cartoons about pregnancy. My doctor talked me into doing 101 cartoons, and my first book, “David We’re Pregnant” was born. This was the first of 3 books about pregnancy and parenthood, which were eventually sent to Universal Press Syndicate. I received a 20-year contract, and FBorFW began in 1979.

Lynn's Comments: This series of strips resulted in more letters from men than most others I’ve written. Apparently, even when it’s running like a charm, the snowblower is one of the least favourite tools in the work shed!

Lynn's Comments: The Bergans and the O'Gradys are both families I know well. It was fun to put their names in the paper.

Lynn's Comments: This actually happened. We were about to go to a house party when we realized we'd left the kids with a sitter too many times. We had just started the car when we decided to go back into the house and be a family. It turned out to be a great evening.

Lynn's Comments: Yes, we did have a train set running around our Christmas tree. One thing you can say about high quality model railroads is…they work!
