Humour:

Ojibwe language speakers are always laughing. One of the reasons is that Ojibwe people speak in pictures. The words that are spoken are very descriptive, often creating images for the listener. For example:

Naabese: means "rooster" in English. What it really means is: "He who struts like a man".
Paashkwaanaajiinh: bat, direct translation: "flying skin".
Binoojiinh: child, direct translation: to raise a little spirit up.

Words from the Mtigwaki Strips:

Boozhoo (boo-zhoo): Hello
Mii-gwetch (mee-gwetch): Thank you
Chi: meaning "big" or "great"
Mtigwaki (mm-TIG-wa-keh): the "land of trees" where Elizabeth lives
Midewiwin (mi-DAY-wi-win): Midewiwin means "way of the heart". Those who belong to the Midewiwin Society are the keepers and protectors of the traditional Anishinabe (Ojibway, Odawa, Potowatomi) ceremonies. They have maintained the teachings in their original form for generations and are very well respected.
Shiimsa (SHEEM-sa): Shiimsa (meaning "little brother/sister of the animal world") is Liz's kitten.
