How funny it is that the people accusing Elly of child abuse have forgotten what the grown-up versions of Mike, Elizabeth and April were like.
None of them have ever accused Elly of abusing them when they were kids. All of them have maintained a great relationship with both their parents.
All of you who have said that the strip wasn't funny, well I don't think it was meant to be funny! It was meant to be a lesson, that we shouldn't lose patience with our kids, that we should listen to what they have to say. Because you know Elly felt horrible about her comment when little Mike said he wanted a hug.

I loved the comment from TM (Alberta, Canada) on 1/6/10. I agree... too many people will be reading too much into "Smack."
And then we'll be hearing about it here.
I'm not downplaying child abuse, but I don't believe that one "smack" means a bad parent.

Yes, the letters complaining about violent behavior toward children were a bit predictable, weren't they?
I wonder why.

I found the January 5th comic to be verbally abusive and physically threatening to Michael. I do not think this should have been published. Even though Elly felt remorse in the last square, the hurtful words were already spoken. There is no humor here.

Maybe when we were growing up & even raising our kid there was a little yelling & an occassional spanking, but they learned the word NO, were happy with what they received as gifts, clothes etc & didn't run to one of those initial slinging do gooder activist groups everytime they didn't get their way. People have swung too far with their accusations & have taken us from an independent thinking society to a police action society.

I liked Elly so much before the current strips started! "Young" Elly is so shrill and impatient and seems to get no joy from being a mom. I'm having trouble figuring why John married her.

Your 'Fixes' are just what I need. I check them about once a week and find them very warming. I'm a gramma now and miss the hugs of my once little ones.
You created my favorite strip. Thanks.
