In response to another comment I read here:I don't think Elly is asking permission to get a job, more like wondering what John thinks of the idea. It's hard to get used to a new routine in a family, so it's always nice to know what othe rest of the family thinks before diving into it.That's just my opinion.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE Sunday's strip!! When that strip was first run, I was too young to understand it and appreciate it. Now, having just moved to the "big city" only a year ago, and having been to a number of parties, I can fully appreciate it as there have been many times I have been in the corner by myself watching while everyone had found people to talk to, though I couldn't find common ground with anyone. Of course being the new guy in the place does not help at all as I have learned that people are not as friendly, nice or open to the new face. But I was laughing to a great degree with this strip as I could TOTALLY relate to it!

There are certainly still young men today who feel that a woman's place is in the home . My husband has worked with quit a few and can not stand them. But even my own dear open-minded husband can fall unconsciously in the old grind that his folks had raised him in, which was exactly what Elly and John were like, when he comes home, but all it takes is a gentle nudge to bring him back to the 00's and not the 80's or 50's.

And being a stay at home mom is the hardest job I have ever had. It is exhausting and straining mentally, emotionally and physically. It can be extremely boring at times with no mental challenge to myself and there are days when I pray that my two year old will lay down for a nap just so I can take one myself. But I would not change any of this for the world.

Personally I think it is harder to be a stay at home mom (SAHM) theses days with all the liberated women's movement that had happen. I have working moms that try make me feel bad about my choice to stay at home because they assume that I am uneducated or unemployable OR that I am simply allowing myself to be walked all over and controlled by my husband and ruining all that hard work our feminist power ancestors did for us. Then I have other SAHM's trying to compete with me and each other to prove who is the better mom with the smartest, healthiest, most perfect children. Which Lynn has portrayed some of this with one of Elly's friend, Ann I think?? So it is really hard to be a SAHM in this day and age cause you have people from all sides making you feel bad about your decision.

And living on a single income can be done in most areas in one person does make enough for it. You have to budget yourself very hard and this is not always fun. In our situation and the economy right now, me going back to work just anywhere would not even cover the cost of daycare. So it is actually cheaper for me to stay at home still.

So yes, I can understand Elly's want to go back to work to prove herself and to bring in a little money for her family and herself, but I understand how she feels about not just wanting to get a job anywhere cause even back then childcare cost where expensive. And back then just having a few college courses under your belt was overqualified for most jobs when people just have high school edu. Nowadays it is not the same, you need a BA just to be a manager of a fast food restaurants but the pay scale never reflects the amount of education you received in most jobs right now.

Yes the strips are a bit outdated but that is the way the world was 'way back when. People should lighten up a bit and praise Lynn for her incredible talent and not complain about the content. Thanks Lynn for making my day bright, first thing each day!

When Merrie is happy she "thinks" a musical note in her thought balloon (8/9), or when little Mike is whistling Lynn draws a note in his balloon, But when Elly hums, all she gets in her baloon is the sound effect description "hum" (8/29) or "hmm (8/25)?Is Elly tone deaf?
