« Question: Which character do you relate to? | Main | Wednesday October 10, 2007 »

Tuesday October 9, 2007

I relate to April because she's always bin the same age as me and what ever she goes threw I go threw as well. Even though we are different in many different ways...our adventures are always similar!

Janu D

I definitely relate to Liz. I miss her when she's not on the strip. The Liz/Anthony stuff is the one story I look forward too.

Susan, Long Island

Which character I relate to the most is easy: Elizabeth. (and that's not just because we share the same name.)

like Elizabeth, I have an older brother. I also have a younger sibling, though we're not as far apart as April & Liz are.
My younger brother has dabbled with starting his own band, he plays the guitar, and is quite skilled at it. (Though he's more partial to the electric than acoustic.)

I also had desires of becoming a teacher, although my plans eventually took a different route. I was still happy for Elizabeth when her plans for teaching came through. I've also had quite a few relationships, many of which "felt right" but in the end, I was a little relieved when they didn't work out. Then, When she was dealing with Howard, it brought flashbacks from when I was similarly attacked from someone I once considered one of my best friends. The one who helped me most through that incident is now my husband, and he & I go back from freshman year of high school!

Many times while reading strips about Liz, I found myself wondering "How did my life manage to get in the funnies?!"

Elizabeth S.

I relate to Elly simply because she's the mom, even though she is much more accomplished than I with her own business, etc. When I first started reading FBorFW, Elizabeth was just learning to speak. My own daughter was about her age. I cut out some of the strips and taped them inside my kitchen cabinet doors, where they still are. I especially liked the strip where Elizabeth is "helping" Elly make cookies. The final panel is Elly saying "Whoever said 'Many hands make light the work' never made cookies with a three year old." That was always my own mother's saying. Also Elizabeth's very first day of kindergarten was my own Rachel Elizabeth's first day, and I too cried. I feel like I have grown old along with Elly, except I am just now entering menopause and I remember she did shortly after April was born. So now I am hot at night and think of the strips where she "flap, flap, flapped" her nightgown. It's been my favorite strip all these years. The end

Today's strip, is another one that suddenly brought up song lyrics in my head. "Lean on me" as sung by Ben. E. King (Or the Club Nouveau version heh.

As for the question of who I relate to- I think I relate to Dee best. We're both working moms, that love our jobs, husbands and children... Not to mention we're both moms to five year old girls- that were born days apart, Mine in September, hers in October. Though Dee went on to have Robin, and I only had my little one (They grow so fast don't they?)I still think I am most like Dee.

I definitely relate most to April. I'm a bit older than her, but we were both born April 1, our moms had us later on in life, and we both have extremely fast tempers and quite a bit of attitude!

Which character do I identify with? Elly, of course, as I am also a wife, mother, and grandma. For over 20 years Lynn has been telling my secrets and revealing to the world what is happening in my house!

I am really happy you are keeping us in the loop with Liz's relationship. She is my favorite character, as she and I are almost the same age and we both have that adventurous personality. I really admired her when she went to work in Mtigawki (I know I just misspelled that). I have hopes to do something like that someday, except as an environmental engineer in a third world country. I want a challenge, much like Liz did.

I just wanted to say that Michael is my son michael. He and I jaust abot passed out when your Michael was reliving the time that he was told about your pregnancy. Why? Because it's exactly what my Michael said when told he was about to have a sister. His exact words were, "Well, if there's a baby in your stomach, open your mouth and let me see".

June W, NJ

I relate to Elly. Todays stip is a perfect example. I have three children in the order of the Paterson kids. They are all so busy they exhaust me. I have thought Ellys sentiment many times.
Its nice to see I am not alone.

Carolyn, NJ

So, Lynn, I wish "Elly's" life didn't parallel mine so closely. I'm married to a professional named John. I have a son Michael who married his Deanna at the same time your Mike and Deanna did. Deanna's mother Marlena is very like "Mira".
I was self employed and was raising 3 children the same time "Elly" was raising hers.
I'm really worried now as my father had a stroke this past Friday, as "Elly's" father had - but my father is ok. Thank you for all the wonderful years of sharing life experiences with us

Anne O, Pennsylvania

The For Better Or Worse character I relate best to is Elly. There was a brief time when I would think "been there, survived that" with Liz but these days I can relate so much to Elly. I have comic books that I reach for when I feel overwhelmed as a stay at home mom during the day, when marriage is underwhelming, when perimenopause symptoms are trying to get the better of me, when I'm dealing with being almost 40 and having a son who is only 5 years old, basically knowing that someone survived these enough to make comic strips out of being a Real Woman helps me smile through the rough times and let them make me stronger.
