About Paul: Mr. Bergan, a character based on a real person, is April's long-suffering music teacher. He inspires April to continue studying classical forms of music despite her desire to play things by the masters "who aren't dead yet". When he's not teaching he performs in a jazz band which appears at local night spots on weekends, and he loves scouring yard sales for vintage and antique musical instruments and stereo equipment.
