Steph Speaks Out!

On March 21st, 2007, Stephanie was asked to make a presentation at a workshop entitled "The Importance of Belonging" which was hosted by the North Bay and District Association for Community Living.

Steph spoke about growing up with special needs. She shared her feelings on being different from the other children with whom she attended school, and talked about how she overcame her difficulties, completed her education and entered the work force.

Lynn joined Steph onstage to talk about how the character Shannon Lake evolved from discussions that Stephanie and Lynn shared, and how Shannon's character is able to deliver some laughs and some learning through FBorFW.

Despite the fact that she was speaking in front of nearly two hundred people, Steph was not rattled. Her friends and family in the audience were more nervous than she was!

Steph's presentation included photos from her childhood, her memories of school, and a list of her many accomplishments. Steph is a Special Olympics swimmer and works as a clerical assistant.

The audience was both entertained and touched by Steph's strength and sharp sense of humour.

After her presentation, Steph hosted an impromptu Q and A session to answer questions about her life and her goals.

Today, Stephanie says that she wouldn't trade her disability for anything in the world, because it's given her so many opportunities to advocate and to educate others. She gets many fan letters from FBorFW readers who are inspired by Shannon Lake.

Steph got an enthusiastic reaction from the audience when she was finished speaking.
