What is a "horseshoe sucker" as referred to in a recent Sunday comic?

These were suckers shaped like horseshoes. They could be worked into your mouth by twisting them to one side - then they were "stuckers!" My favourite flavours were cherry and root beer.

Perhaps these were a British Columbia confection only?! There was enough sugar in one of these suckers to launch the average 5 year old onto the next continent - and they only cost a nickel!
